4 Tips for Tackling Life’s Curveballs

A curveball is in reference to a baseball pitch; it’s the one that nobody expects and throws all the player off. Life is full of curveballs. When we least expect it, something will happen that will throw us off course. Whether it’s being fired from a job, a surprise pregnancy or a medical diagnosis, there will be times when you have to muster extra strength to get through. There’s no point in trying to bury your head in the sand in an attempt to avoid it all because that will only put off the inevitable. Here are some tips for coming face to face with life’s curveballs and surviving.

Don’t Take It Personally

When something goes wrong, it isn’t because the universe is out to get you. Try to remember that you’re not the first person to deal with something tough and you won’t be the last. If you take every knock you have personally, you’ll never be able to learn from the experience. Often times, there is no rhyme or reason to the things we have to go through, so there’s no point in thinking you’re being punished for something or taking things personally. In fact, it’s often the exact opposite. If you’re open to it, you could turn a bad experience into an opportunity.


You Haven’t Got a Crystal Ball

If you’re fired from your job for a ridiculous reason, it would be easy to get angry and fear how you’re going to find another job. However, being fired could be the best thing that’s ever happened to you. You may find out that the company you worked for hadn’t been paying taxes correctly and now everyone has lost their jobs and the company can no longer trade. Sometimes, the bad things that happen are blessings in disguise. No-one can see into the future, so try not to panic when you’re faced with something difficult.



You don’t need to be a practiced Yogi to get the benefits of meditation. If life throws you a curveball that overwhelms you, you need to find ways of calming yourself. Adding stress to more stress will eventually lead to a meltdown. Meditation is a way of taking a breather and reflecting on the problems that you deem unsolvable. Using techniques like meditation will mean you’re more likely to call the plumbing company when the washing machine breaks down, rather than having a break down yourself.


Ask Questions

If you feel like bad things are happening to you constantly, you need to ask yourself some questions in order to find the right solutions. Avoid questions like, ‘Why did this happen to me?’ and start asking questions like, ‘What do I need to do to get through this?’ It’s also important to set goals for the future, like, working for an employer that values your skills and is willing to build upon them. One of the best questions to ask, that we often avoid is, ‘what do I want?’ Try and focus on what you want, rather than what the challenges you’re facing.
